I am 55 years old and I am being kind to myself when I say that I am not in the best physical condition of my life.  The joints hurt, I haven't run in several years, and I am 90 lbs. over weight.

Those are the circumstances.  But, to hell with circumstances. I have a bucket list, and on my bucket list is a marathon.  So, by golly, I am going to run a marathon.

I can't just sign up to run a marathon when I can't run a quarter mile.  That is a great way to get hurt.  To run a marathon, I have to build the kind of body that can run a marathon.  That takes effort and commitment over the long run.

These are the steps I am taking in order to successfully run a marathon.

Step 1:  Commit myself to running a marathon.  Check.

Step 2:  Recognize all the other times I have committed to a course of action and been successful.  For instance, in my 40's, I decided that I would get a black belt in martial arts before I turned 50.  Seven years later, I had three black belts included a second degree in Hapkido.  I can do this!  Check.

Step 3:  Determine the date by when I will run the marathon.  I don't want it to be too soon, since I need to develop the abilities necessary.  So, my goal is to run it before my 61st birthday.  That is, before June 13, 2021, I will successfully complete a marathon. Check.

Step 4:  Determine my goal for time it will take to finish the marathon.  My goal is to complete the marathon in 4 hours.  This will help determine the effort I need to put into the required fitness level.  Check.

Step 5:  Put together a training plan that includes diet, weight loss goals, and exercise.  In my case, I am using the Isagenix meal replacement diet, will lose 90 more lbs, and have started walk/running 20 miles per week.  As my ability increases, the effort will also increase.  Check.

Step 6:  Make it real in the world by not only putting effort into it, but talking about it with friends and family.  Including this blog, and the tee-shirt I wear when I work out that says, "Couch to Marathon by June 13, 2021."  Check.

Step 7:  Its a game.  Work hard.  Sweat hard.  Play hard.  But I won't be hard on myself.  Check.

Step 8:  Most important of all:  KEEP GOING!!!

So, this is part of my five year journey.  I am four weeks into it.  I will occasionally share the trip, not only to motivate myself, but maybe to inspire you to take on a large project, just because you can!

Whatever journey you are on, make it a good one and KEEP GOING!!!

Go for it my friends.  Go for it.
